In which the author's identity is revealed

I did it! I'm all moved in to my new apartment and my new university office in Ontario. Once I get a home printer and more books to fill my office shelves, I'll have everything I need to live, write, and work effectively. Eventually, this life will become normal.

I don't have my routine down (that's why I've missed so many posts lately), and I don't quite know how to behave. It's a big transition, going from student to professor. Well, grad school is one long process of transition, really: you start doing the conferences, teaching, and of course the large-scale project that makes or breaks you (or both), the dissertation. It's all to build professional skills, whether you go on in academia or not. But even with that prep, the step from writing "student" on your forms and living the student lifestyle to being a "doctor" and "colleague" of professors you still respect so much as authorities...well, it does take some mental gymnastics.

One of the things I keep running over is: how compatible is this blog with my new position? I teach new media. I firmly believe that participating in online community is a crucial part of learning about participatory culture and being "digitally literate." I want to continue to blog. On a personal level, too, I need a forum for honest, creative discussion about animation, outside the strictures of formal publishing. So far I've used the semi-anonymity of this blog to ensure my freedom of speech. But I feel I can no longer write while hiding where this work is taking place or who I am. I've already effectively linked this blog and my thesis through the survey; it's not hard to discover who I am. So today I'd like to say that yes, I am Dr. Sandra Annett, assistant professor in the Department of Film Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. And Academic Anime is now my professional/work blog.

No, I will not post stories about my students or colleagues. No, I will not stay on LJ forever; I'll likely migrate to another service or site some day. But yes, I do want to keep up with you, with all the friends I've made here.

In short, however much things change, let's stay connected. What else do we have blog communities for, anyways?
