Seeking new show/movie recs

Another quickie post, I'm afraid, but I have a question for anyone who actually has time to do more than skim the Anime News Network in the mornings. What's looking good in the fall anime season? Any promising Noitamina shows? Anything that looks a little different from the usual genre/otaku-bait shows? I've moved away from my RL anime friends and miss their casual advice!

I am also open to recs for North American/live-action shows with fannish potential. Is "Once Upon a Time" any good?

Hmm, Chihayafuru has great characters, Last Exile has a unique setting, Fate/Zero is good overall, but especially for fights, and UN-GO has some great mystery storytelling...and that's why I'm watching the shows I am this season! XD

If you only check out one of my suggestions though, make it Chihayafuru. That one is definitely my favorite of this season so far.

I looked up Chihayafuru, and it looks cool! Things like karuta (especially hanafuda) are really making a comeback, aren't they? Thanks for the rec, I'll check it out!

BBC Doctor Who has been on my list for ages! It's just so big now, I'm not sure where to jump in. Is there any particular season/Doctor I should start with?

No prob! If you watch it, I would wait until after seeing the first three episodes before passing judgement on it, as it takes a little while to build.

for starters you must for new who!
so doctor nine and so on...

but is 6 season now and 3 doctors?

i think you can start with the last two episodes of season one and then in season two with the Ten doctor (my personal favorite! ;) he is passionate and he is really in conflict with his guilt, with his love to humans (some of them in particular as romantic love and real friendship), and where he can push and he can change in human lives in order to save them.

season 2,3 4 are of David Tennant the ten doctor and 3 companions: Rose (who came from nine) Martha, Donna(my fav.) and the better bad guy ever The Master!

season 5 and 6 are of the eleven doctor Matt Smith and his companions: Amy pond, Rory, and the mysterious know too much about the future and i'm here and then not River Song.
11 is more playful, but he is more drastic than ten when he take a decision, he has no conflict, guilt yes, conflict no and he hides this in goofiness that is almost cute

the difference between doctors is that his personality is different and he is changing constantly in his approach at his loneliness, at his power over good and evil, his guilt, and life.

so I'm not sure ;D

but they are really fast to watch and if you don't like one you go the the next and if something is lost to you, ask me anything!

Hi Sandra,
I've enjoyed your posts. Everything has been helpful as I try to break into anime/manga, my weak link as an academic.
I read today that Drawn and Quarterly is going to release Tatsumi Yoshihiro's "Fallen Words," which I assume is based on his 2009 "Gekiga yose: Shibahama." I'm wondering, have you had a chance to read this yet? I haven't, and am going to check it out in prep for the translation. Being a rakugo specialist, this may be the best "in" for me as I approach anima/manga studies.
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt,

Glad the site has been helpful to you! I'm teaching a course on world animation next term and plan to post abbreviated notes from my lectures, so I hope it'll get better.

I haven't read any of Tatsumi's work in Japanese, only the translation of "A Drifting Life," so I'm looking forward to "Fallen Words." There's been something of a Tatsumi Renaissance lately, eh? Between Eric Khoo's film and now the new translation, I think his world-wide reputation is growing. If you want any more recommendations for things to broaden your anime/manga horizons, just ask me in the new year! (I'm home for the holidays now and likely won't be online too much in the next week.)

Rakugo sounds like a fascinating topic of study, and I'll have a look at your Wordpress site too. Happy holidays!
